I am a mix of professionally taught and self-taught painter with a BA in Studio Art from
Drew and an MFA in Studio Art from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Born on
March 25 th , 1989, I have had a penchant for seeing things differently from others, especially
during my childhood. I think that this aspect of my life may have been one of the contributing
factors in my artistic development. This is especially since I have had difficulty with expressions
and clear communication of my thoughts and feelings since childhood. Through art, I finally
found the means to express the things experiences and the thoughts that go on inside of my head
and to help people to understand how I see the world. My passion for art just continued to grow
throughout my 36 years of life in this world, and with those passions also grew my observations
about the world and the relationships between fantasy and reality. At first, I mainly focused on
creating fantasy paintings, sharing my inner world with people and my interpretations of ancient
myths and legends and how they and their archetypes still play out within the world. Since then,
however, my subject matter evolved to include the histories of African Americans, in particular
the ones who might not be that well known, and those whose works have contributed to the arts
and in particular to the field of comic books and cartoons. Through my creations, I feel as
though I am shining new light on African American artists and helping to make sure that their
stories are told with paintings and tributes to their works.
It feels like through my art, I not only am I helping myself to share my soul to the world,
I am also expanding their view of it by teaching them about people that they would not have
known about. In the words of one of my many art inspirations, Alan Moore, “It is not the job of
the artist to give the audience what the audience wants. If the audience knew what they needed,
then they would not be the audience, they would be the artists. It is the job of the artist, to give
the audience what they need” – Alan Moore.
