Out of the Abyss Session 2: The Price of Survival

The session opens with a high-stakes ambush in the Stone Giant Religious Center in Gracklestug. After the party's Arcane Eye is detected, they are immediately engaged by a Marilith, two Glabrazu, a Nalfeshnee, and several other demonic entities. Taryn initiates the combat with a devastating critical hit on a Glabrazu, causing a cardiac injury that weakens the creature significantly. The early stages of the battle are defined by intense crowd control, with Driddle using a twinned Psychic Lance to neutralize Vrocks, while the demons retaliate with Power Word Stun and magical darkness to obscure the battlefield. As the combat intensifies, the party suffers significant physical and psychological tolls. Thavos and Valentia both sustain permanent injuries from critical hits; Thavos suffers a cardiac injury from the Marilith's blades, and Valentia loses her right eye to a Hezrou's bite. Despite these setbacks, the party coordinates effectively. Brand uses Freedom of the Waves and a Wall of Thorns to manage the battlefield and block reinforcements, while Valentia delivers massive Divine Smites to eliminate the Nalfeshnee. The tide finally turns when Thavos and Taryn focus their efforts on the Marilith, eventually severing her arms and allowing Valentia to deliver the finishing blow. Following the battle, the party experiences a shift in their group dynamic. Drogan, the party's NPC cleric, is deeply traumatized by the power of the demons and decides to stay in Gracklestug to assist refugees and repair relations between the Duergar and Dwarves. The DM notes that Drogan has developed a level of paranoia-based madness. The party takes a long rest in the keep, but their sleep is far from peaceful. Taryn, Thavos, and Driddle all experience haunting visions that result in levels of indefinite madness for Taryn and Driddle, while Thavos has a direct mental confrontation with the demon lord Orcus. In the aftermath of the rest, the party receives a message from Gauntlgrym via a sending stone, informing Taryn that a letter from her parents has arrived. This sparks a debate about their next steps. While the allure of returning to the surface for healing and personal business is strong, the party ultimately decides to prioritize their mission to Baphomet's Labyrinth. They possess the necessary items to proceed and feel the pressure of the demonic clock, though the lingering effects of their madness and injuries remain a significant concern for the journey ahead.
