Curse of Strahd Session 9: An Invitation From The Devil

The session begins with a recap of the party's arrival in Vallaki and their harrowing encounter with a banshee at the Blue Water Inn. After recovering, the party debates a formal invitation to dinner at Castle Ravenloft. Riordan expresses deep mistrust, refusing to enter the 'creature's palace,' while others like Steinman and Chaya believe that declining a despot's invitation is more dangerous than attending. Steinman consults Lady Wachter, who encourages the visit, suggesting Strahd is a private but generous host. The party eventually decides to go, securing formal attire before departing the western gates of Vallaki for the six-hour journey. On the road, the group encounters a shifty band of Vistani 'gardeners' who offer guidance but are declined. Shortly after, Steinman discovers a bundled package containing blood-stained clothes and a letter purportedly from the deceased Burgomaster Kolyan Indirovich. By comparing the handwriting to Strahd’s invitation, the party realizes the letter is a forgery designed to lure adventurers. At a fork in the road, they find a black carriage waiting for them. While most of the party enters the carriage, Riordan chooses to follow on horseback, maintaining his distance from the vampire's influence. Upon arriving at Castle Ravenloft, the party crosses a precarious drawbridge over a 50-foot chasm. Chaya uses Detect Magic to reveal that the guards' armor is enchanted and the driver is an undead thrall. They are met by Rahadin, Strahd’s chamberlain, who leads them through the oppressive, organ-filled halls of the fortress. Riordan remains outside, choosing to scout from the surrounding pine trees rather than enter the lion's den. The party is ushered into a grand dining hall where Strahd von Zarovich himself is playing a thunderous melody on a massive organ. He welcomes them to a lavish feast, appearing surprisingly well-spoken and hospitable. During the meal, Strahd claims he is looking for a successor to rule Barovia and seeks a cure for a 'hunger' that occasionally robs him of his self-control. He expresses a calculated regret for his previous attack on Ireena, framing himself as a cursed man in need of assistance. The session concludes with a tense diplomatic exchange. Strahd attempts to distance himself from the more radical actions of his guards while the party remains deeply skeptical of his 'regret.' Despite the civil atmosphere, the underlying threat of the Dreadlord remains palpable as the party realizes they are now deeply entangled in his political and personal machinations.
