Curse of Strahd Session 8: What Lurks Beyond the Lantern Light

The session begins with the party settling into the Blue Water Inn for the night, while Steinman and Riordan stay at the Wachter House. The atmosphere is tense as Chaya keeps a nervous watch, observing ravens on the roof that she initially mistakes for bats. Around 1:00 AM, three mysterious figures enter the inn for a nightcap, unsettling the party before departing. Gretch later notices a woman wandering the streets and uses his spirit board to consult the entities, receiving a 'Woe' omen and a warning that while devils are not in Vallaki, they are hunting him from the windmill. Conflict erupts when Gretch confronts the wandering woman, who reveals herself as a Banshee. Her supernatural wail instantly incapacitates Vesper and Chaya, dropping them to zero hit points and waking the rest of the party across town. Gretch manages to revive Chaya with a Healing Word, who then uses her Preserve Life ability to stabilize Vesper. Stoick rushes downstairs to assist, but finds his physical attacks largely ineffective against the incorporeal spirit. The battle concludes when Chaya successfully uses Turn Undead, breaking through the Banshee's immunities and forcing the weeping spirit to flee into the night. In the morning, the party reunites at the Wachter House for a tense breakfast. Steinman proposes a controversial plan to infect the rescued children with lycanthropy to use them as 'bait' or 'infiltrators' against the werewolf clans. Lady Wachter is disgusted by the suggestion and strictly forbids the party from approaching the children, placing them under her personal protection. This creates a significant rift between the party and their potential patron. Finally, the party receives a formal invitation delivered to the Blue Water Inn. The letter, sealed with a raven crest, is from Strahd von Zarovich himself, inviting them to dine at Castle Ravenloft and promising safe passage. Despite the obvious danger and the ongoing wine shortage at the inn, the party decides to accept the invitation, hoping to seek help for the afflicted Doru and believing it is better to meet the Dreadlord than to insult him.
